Armed police have arrested a man following reports of a gunman at large in Wimbledon.

Witnesses reported about 20 officers, each holding a gun, scouring Lower Downs Road before moving on to Dennis Park Crescent.

Officers initially attended Wimbledon station just before 9am after reports of a man "seen in possession of an item believed to be a firearm in the Wimbledon area".

They detained a man at around 11:30, who is believed to have dropped a suspicious package at Wimbledon station after travelling there on a tram.

Resident Matt Wheeler, a train driver, told the Standard: "At about 10am I was walking by and noticed a load of police and police cars.

"There were about 20 armed officers as well as some more with dogs.

"They moved around the corner into Dennis Park Crescent and returned 20 minutes later with a guy."

Former councillor Peter Walker, who was cycling down the road when he was warned to stay away, told the Wimbledon Guardian: "The police are all tooled up. I can see around nine of them now, all with helmets and carrying those big guns.

"They are telling us to stay back."

A Merton police spokesman said: "This morning an incident was reported after a male was seen acting strangely on the tram on his way to Wimbledon.

"A vigilant member of the public then contacted police with reasonable concerns after the male apparently dropped a bag which was deemed potentially suspicious.

"He was quickly identified by local officers and an armed police unit attended as a precaution. The address, near to Kingston Road, junction Lower Downs Road, had appropriate cordons quickly put in place.

"A search of the address is currently underway, with the male detained."

A Met spokesman confirmed that local officers, including armed officers, attended Wimbledon train station in an attempt to locate the suspect.

"Police were called on Tuesday, 16 August at around 08:56 hours to a report of a male seen in possession of an item believed to be a firearm in the Wimbledon area.

"A man was traced to an address at Raynes Park at 10:47 hours and has been arrested. Enquiries continue.

"There were no reports of shots fired and no one has been injured.

"This is not being treated as a terrorist-related incident."
