Classical introduction: Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson has long sung the praises of a classical education: in 2008 he recommended that the introduction of Greek and Latin could help keep young people off the streets, and last week he gave a lecture on why modern-day London is like ancient Athens.
The Mayor will continue the trend later this month, when he is signed up to host a gala fundraiser for Classics for All. The charity, which funds the study of the subject in the state sector and counts actress Joanna Lumley and Private Eye’s Ian Hislop among its patrons, will hold the event at City Hall on September 18. It will also feature a performance by the Actors of Dionysus who, we hear, are rather racy.
