Canine cupcakes all round at dog awards

TV presenter Adrian Chiles hosted the sixth annual Dogs’ Trust Honours at Home House in Portman Square yesterday with doggy cupcakes, canine canapés and popcorn for dogs with seaweed seasoning and bowls of iced water.

Some humans accompanying their canine companions accidentally sampled the dogfood and pronounced it very tasty.

Among the panting four-legged guests were Scampi, a Jack Russell who saved his owner from a sexual attack; Gypsie, a Staffie who alerted his owner to a house fire, and Atrayu, a Newfoundland who is a constant companion to a boy with leukaemia. Hugh Bonneville and Eamonn Holmes were among the judges.

Chiles confessed he has never had a dog. “That look of adoration is quite unnerving, I’m not worthy of it,” he said. “But if I had one, I’d agree with my friend Lee Dixon, former Arsenal footballer, who says you need a dog that gives you lots of exercise.”

Fashion designer Bruce Oldfield was there but without his dog. “It’s too hot,” he explained.
