Perhaps it’s just as well that Christine Blower, the £140,000-a-year general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, keeps out of the classroom these days.

Commenting on the latest batch of free schools, she complains: “The overwhelming majority — 45 per cent — of the new schools will be in London, which by common agreement already boasts the best schools in the country.”

In fairness, when she taught at Holland Park comprehensive she taught French not maths.
