Power of the four-poster

4 July 2013

Launching his latest book — Men from the Ministry, How Britain Saved its Heritage — Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, recalled that Lord Curzon backed the Ancient Monuments Act in 1913.

“I’ve just noticed that Lord Curzon’s bed is on display in the next room,” he told guests at Christie’s last night including Mary Beard, Rupert Hambro, Sir Roy Strong, Sir Laurie Magnus and Marcus Binney. “It’s nice to think he conceived the idea of English Heritage in that bed.”

The giant four-poster is on sale for £80,000-£120,000 and has room for several brilliant conservationists.
