Oh, for the life that might have been. While Gordon Brown was making a serious pro-Union speech at Scotland’s Borders Books Festival this weekend, his wife Sarah was dreaming of the road not taken.

The ex-PR tweeted from the festival that she had just “met @VivGroskop who has written the book I would secretly have loved to write”.

So what does the blurb for Groskop’s I Laughed, I Cried reveal about Sarah’s inner life? “Viv is fed up, recession-scarred and pushing 40. She always wanted to be a comedian. But surely that’s not advisable if you have a mortgage, three children and a husband who is, er, not exactly a fan of stand-up?”
