What a Rotten fib: Johnny never voted for Mrs T after all

Arguably the greatest compliment of Lady Thatcher’s career came when John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, told a reporter after the 1983 election that he’d voted for her.

Author Duncan Fallowell tells me he met Lydon in New York in October 1983 and asked whether he really did vote for Mrs T. “No,” replied Lydon. “I just said that because I thought it was the most spiteful thing I could say before I left England to live in New York.” Did he vote for anyone? “It’s a waste of time. But she’s tougher than Reagan because he follows her politics, not the other way round.”
