London Mayoral election results: What Sadiq Khan plans to do in his new job

Robin de Peyer7 May 2016

Sadiq Khan made history as he became London’s first Muslim mayor.

The Labour son of a bus driver defeated his main Tory rival to secure one of Europe's most powerful directly-elected political offices.

Tooting MP Mr Khan described the contest as a “referendum on housing” and has pledged to build up to 80,000 new homes a year.

Here are the policies he says he’ll focus on as Boris Johnson’s successor:

  • Crime: Make London safer by restoring neighbourhood policing, tackling gangs, knife crime and extremism

  • Transport: Freeze travel costs for four years and introduce a one-hour bus "hopper" ticket

  • Housing: build thousands more homes for Londoners each year, with half of new properties to be affordable and a better deal for renters

  • Business: Pledges to be the "most pro-business mayor yet" and will work in partnership with industry to deliver on skills, infrastructure and growth

  • Air quality: Restore the capital to safe and legal levels, pedestrianise Oxford Street and protect the Green Belt

  • Low pay: Work with employers to make London a living wage city

  • Equality: Challenge the gender pay gap and promises to deliver ways to support women to break the glass ceiling while removing barriers to their success

  • Cycling: More segregated cycle routes, promises to take action on dangerous junctions and make lorries on the capital's roads safer

  • Skills: Pledged to set up "Skills for Londoner" to ensure all residents have the opportunity to train and gain skills in areas that are lacking within the economy

  • Prejudice: Make the city a fairer and more tolerant place, in which all people can prosper and live free from prejudice
