Former London Mayor Boris Johnson has launched a scathing attack on Sadiq Khan, saying he is running a “spineless” administration at City Hall.

The foreign secretary blasted the Labour politician while on the campaign trail today in a heated outburst, in which he said the "apathy and gelatinous, glutinous, uselessness” of City Hall was damaging the capital.

He referenced the growing frustration around the Crossrail 2 project, which was cast into doubt after being left out of the Conservative manifesto.

Speaking to ITV News, he said: “It’s up to him frankly to put police out on the beat – he has got the powers to do it.

“It’s up to him to get proper financing for TfL. It’s up to him to get Crossrail 2 done. Where is he? What on earth is going on with Crossrail 2?

“I’ve never seen such a spineless performance frankly from City Hall on Crossrail 2. Absolutely hopeless.

“There are great projects that are London deserves and needs that are going by the board because of the apathy and gelatinous, glutinous, uselessness of the current administration in City Hall.

“That’s the first time really I’ve bashed the poor guy.”

The Railway Industry Association has warned London could be “left behind” without the Crossrail project, expressing concern both the Tories and Labour will concentrate on improving rail links in Northern cities before committing to funding for the capital.

Mr Khan, who was elected as Mr Johnson’s replacement last year, has also warned of police station closures in London if the Tories win the General Election.

He told ITV News: “This is a downright lie by Boris Johnson. TfL gave Government the Crossrail 2 business case months ago, but the Tories have dithered and delayed and even refused to put Crossrail 2 in their manifesto.”
