The Prime Minister has indicated he may support gay marriage in church, it was claimed today.

David Cameron suggested he was open to the idea, according to gay rights campaigners who spoke privately to him this week at an annual No 10 drinks party for leading gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual figures.

Downing Street sources would not confirm the conversation but did not dispute accounts of it.

Campaigners said he gave a strong impression that he would be comfortable with religious same-sex marriages, providing there was a watertight law to protect churches from being compelled to join in against their will.

Ben Cohen, of Out4Marriage, said: “We are encouraged that on a personal basis the Prime Minister gave a very clear impression that he supported allowing same-sex marriages to take place in religious institutions that wish to do it.

"He clearly felt that would be fair and right.” Official government policy is to legislate for same-sex marriages by 2015 but not in churches.
