Labour leadership hopeful Jeremy Corbyn has called for a ban on employers making their staff work when indoor temperatures exceed 30C.

As Britain endures a sweltering heatwave, the left-wing MP for Islington North said today he would table the proposals before the House of Commons on Thursday.

They would place a legal duty on employers to protect their staff from "heat stress" and "thermal discomfort".

The so-called Early Day Motion calls for a maximum working temperature of 30C for average office environments and a cap of 27C where the work involves "strenuous activity".

It would mean employers having a statutory duty to introduce effective control measures such as breaks, access to water or air conditioning.

Mr Corbyn said: "In this weather, high temperatures aren't just a problem in heavy industry but for millions of workers have been struggling with the heat in offices, schools, shops, call-centres - you name it.

"Good employers will have been taking steps to help out their workers in the heatwave.

"But putting a maximum temperature into law will give everyone a legal right to basic protections from working in unbearable conditions."
