Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner has become a grandmother at the age of 37.

The Labour MP shared her joyful news over social media on Wednesday morning as she thanked the NHS staff who delivered the baby.

Party frontbencher Ms Rayner, who represents Ashton-under-Lyne constituency, was a teenage mum who had her first son, Ryan, aged 16.

She is now the House of Commons’ youngest grandmother.

Mother-of-three and Corbyn ally Ms Rayner tweeted: “At just before 6am today after an eventful evening, I became a grandma.

“Thank you to all the wonderful staff at #NHS #Tameside #Grangela.”

The Twitter hashtag #Grangela began trending across the site, with many people congratulating the politician and her family.

Ms Rayner, who worked as a care worker and union representative before entering politics, told the Standard earlier this year that people wrote her off as a “scumbag” for falling pregnant so young.

She hopes her story will show there are different paths to Westminster, adding that she grew up in poverty in Stockport. She said she went to school without any breakfast and her own mother could not read or write.

Ms Rayner, who is tipped to be a future Labour leader, was first elected to Parliament in 2015, increasing the party’s majority in the Greater Manchester constituency of Ashton-under-Lyne.
