Ed Miliband has attacked Prime Minister's Questions as a "terrible advert for politics" and declared he would change it if given the opportunity.

The Labour leader said Westminster's setpiece weekly event encouraged the view that politicians were a "bunch of schoolkids who want to shout at each other".

He is the latest leader to call for an end to the questions' confrontational nature.

Tony Blair pledged to end the "yah-boo" of British politics, while David Cameron vowed to reform the "Punch and Judy" flavour of PMQs - both without success.

But Mr Miliband did not set out his plans for reform, telling a charity event in London last night: "I don't know how to change it so I'm not going to make false promises about changing it but I would love to change it if I could."

Mr Miliband has enjoyed a successful past couple of weeks across the Despatch Box from Mr Cameron, but has previously attracted criticism.

Commons leader Angela Eagle accused the Prime Minister of trying to "dodge" a session of PMQs before the Easter recess.

It was announced today that an extra Commons sitting day has been pencilled in for Friday March 23, two days after the Budget. But MPs will still head for their Easter holiday on Tuesday March 27.

Labour said ministers had chosen the Friday rather than extending the session by a day to avoid having an extra PMQs, which are held on Wednesdays.

Ms Eagle said: "David Cameron will do anything to dodge Prime Minister's Questions. We're beginning to think he's frit."
