Russell Brand has published a five-minute recording of his reflections on the outcome of the general election.

The outspoken comedian gave his verdict on the Tory triumph - insisting ordinary people are "going to get screwed".

Brand urged his fans to seek "new ways of being compassionate" after claiming there will be "no shortage of meanness" from the next government in the video posted on his YouTube channel The Trews.

The comic admitted David Cameron's return to power could benefit him personally as "a wealthy person in Britain" but said large swathes of society - including "immigrants, poor people and NHS users" - are in a lot of trouble.

Mr Brand also referred to his encounter with Ed Miliband during the election campaign, likening the furore it triggered to a plotline from The Thick of It.

He publicly endorsed Mr Miliband after their meeting but in today's video appeared to concede his intervention did not have the impact he had hoped for.
