Motorists faced gridlocked traffic as a major road into London was shut this morning because of overrunning engineering works.

Drivers on the A12 reported being held at a standstill as they began their weeks held up in queues stretching between Hackney Wick and Wanstead on the way into central London.

Transport for London urged motorists to avoid the road if possible and warned of "severe delays" thanks to the closure in the southbound direction at Redbridge Roundabout.
