Distracted drivers have been caught doing their make-up and even brushing their teeth at the wheel in police footage.

Other shocking antics caught on film include motorists shaving while on the road, reading newspapers and maps, and using iPads, rested on the steering wheel.

The culprits were filmed from an unmarked lorry used as a viewing platform by officers during a five-day operation across the motorways of Hampshire and the Thames Valley.

Last month's Operation Tramline resulted in 198 motorists being prosecuted, with the vast majority caught using a mobile phone.

Two tractors, a taxi and 38 vans were among the vehicles stopped on the M27, M3, A34, M4 and M40 because the driver was using a mobile.

All drivers caught were issued with notices, which will result in a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

Sergeant Paul Dimond said: "Distracted driving is proven to be a significant factor in many of the collisions on our roads.

"The vast majority were holding phones in their lap and accessing applications or texting with their hands held low - this is incredibly dangerous both for the motorist and for other road users.

"Through innovative use of equipment and technology available to us, we will continue to crack down on this and will repeat Operation Tramline again in the future."
