Commuters' late night brush with a baby fox on the Tube

They’ve invaded London’s gardens and even homes - now it seems that urban foxes are taking over the Tube.

Gadget and gaming journalist Stephen Ebert and student Harriet Horn were travelling on the underground late last night when a fox suddenly came into their train and jumped onto a seat.

The pair, who were strangers but started talking to each other about the sudden appearance of the animal, both took pictures and posted them on Twitter.

Within hours, the images were going viral on Twitter and Facebook, although Mr Ebert and Ms Horn seemed taken aback by their sudden fame, with her tweeting him to say “Who knew one little fox could cause such a stir!” before both went silent.

It is thought the fox was pictured near Edgware Road Tube station.

Ms Horn replied to one Twitter question, saying it “hopped off and went into a hole.”

A spokesman for Transport for London said: “We have seen the pictures but we haven’t received any direct complaints or reports of the fox.

“It’s very rare for foxes to get onto to trains like this, although it does occasionally happen on the further outreaches of the tube in places like Amersham or Epping.”

When deputy mayor Kit Malthouse was re-elected to the London Assembly earlier this year he pledged to make the problem of urban foxes a priority, saying: “Last time I ran the big issue was dangerous dogs...but the issue that has come up this time is urban foxes.

“People are afraid to let their small children play outside because of them. They are more and more worried about the number of foxes as numbers continue to grow.

“I’m going to be looking closely at that issue to see if anything can be done.”
