A Tube station was evacuated amid claims a "grenade" was seen on a platform.

South Kensington station was shut just after 1.15pm this afternoon due to a "suspect object" on a platform.

At least five police cars arrived on the scene as the station was closed and cordoned off for about 30 minutes.

Several people posted on social media that a sighting of a "grenade" or "explosive" sparked the security alert.

However, British Transport Police has now investigated the object and deemed it non-suspicious, though the force could not immediately confirm what the item was.

Medical student Dushi Arumuganesan, 24, said passengers were first moved from the District line platform to the Piccadilly line, before whole the station was cleared.

She said: "We just got told it was an emergency situation and that the station was closed."

The station, where tourists get off for some of London's top museum's and galleries, was opened up again by 2pm.

A source at the station said the package had turned out to be a child's rucksack left under the railway bridge.

"They said it was an emergency and something suspicious," a newsagent told the Standard.

A BTP spokesman said: “Our officers were called to South Kensington London Underground station on Monday, 29 June, to reports of a suspect object on the westbound platform.

“The call came into police at 1.15pm. Officers attended and investigated and determined the object was not suspicious.

“The station was closed for 32 minutes, but has now fully reopened.”
