Extinction Rebellion co-founder Roger Hallam will fly a drone as part of the "Heathrow Pause" protest on Saturday, the group has said.

Mr Hallam was pre-emptively arrested on Thursday ahead of the planned drone action - flying the devices in the 5km exclusion zone - which is designed to disrupt flights at the airport and started on Friday.

Mr Hallam was released from custody on Friday evening.

And Heathrow Pause, a splinter of the Extinction Rebellion movement, tweeted on Saturday morning: "UPDATE: Roger Hallam, cofounder of Extinction Rebellion, will be flying his drone at 12 midday today near Heathrow. Location to be announced nearer the time.

"Roger was released from custody around 10pm last night."

It added in another post: "More people are getting in touch to become pilots of toy drones in the exclusion zone outside Heathrow Airport. These people's selfless actions matters. In a world devastated by the climate and ecological emergency we must ask ourselves, which side of history are we on?"

Nine arrested as Heathrow drone protest fails

So far, Heathrow Pause action has not interrupted air traffic and flights at Heathrow have continued as normal.

It failed on Friday as technical issues hampered attempts to use drones and police arrested two climate change protesters at the airport.

The Met has arrested 18 people so far in relation to the protest.

A dispersal order around the airport will remain in place until 4.30am on Sunday "to prevent criminal activity which poses a significant safety and security risk to the airport".

Heathrow Airport has said it is committed to addressing climate change, but added "illegal protest activity, designed with the intention of disrupting thousands of people, is not the answer".
