Creditors have granted approval for House of Fraser to close 31 stores, resulting in up to 6,000 job losses.

The chain announced plans to close 31 of its branches next year, in a radical restructuring by the company’s Chinese owners.

The flagship Oxford Street store is among those to close.

As well as the Oxford Street store, which opened in 1937, a more recent City branch on King William Street and the Baker Street head office will be axed.

However, stores in Victoria, Richmond, Croydon and Westfield London shopping centre are to be spared.

Other stores earmarked for closure are Altrincham, Aylesbury, Birkenhead, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Camberley, Cardiff, Carlisle, Chichester, Cirencester, Cwmbran, Darlington, Doncaster, Edinburgh Frasers, Epsom, Grimsby, High Wycombe, Hull, Leamington Spa, Lincoln, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, Skipton, Swindon, Tlford, Wolverhampton, and Worcester.
