The number of people charged in relation to rioting and looting in London has reached a total of 940, said Scotland Yard.

The total number of arrests in the capital has also swelled over the weekend, reaching 1,635.

The new figures in relation to disorder and looting in London were released as Scotland Yard said extra officers will continue to police the streets.

Over the weekend approximately 16,000 police officers were on duty over a 24-hour period.

Extra officers will be out this week, providing a "highly visible presence" as the policing operation continues.

Scotland Yard said the number of officers has been planned out on a daily basis after an assessment of intelligence and information, and forthcoming events across London.

Officers on duty are a mix of mutual aid, borough officers, public order-trained officers and specialist central units.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh said: "I know that there will be substantial interest in the number of officers that we have on duty over the coming days.

"I want Londoners to know that we will continue to have a very visible, hugely increased number of police officers out on our streets. We are out across London arresting those people who brought crime, disorder, fear and violence to our streets. We will relentlessly pursue them, as our communities deserve."

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said there had been 1,179 court appearances nationwide - the majority relating to burglary, theft and handling, and violence and violent disorder. The spokeswoman said 65% of those had been remanded into custody.
