A British man charged with murdering his girlfriend in Crete has written an emotional letter from his prison cell describing her as an "angel", it was reported.

Chelsea Hyndman, 21, died on the Greek island on May 17 after suffering ruptured internal organs which doctors said were caused by physical violence.

Her boyfriend Luke Walker, 22, from Brierley Hill, West Midlands, was formally charged with murder three days later.

In a letter to his friends seen by the Birmingham Mail, he wrote: "I know (Chelsea) is up there watching over me and all of you.

"I pray for her every night. She was the most perfect, wonderful person I have ever met. Her smile used to light up the room. Life is going to be so hard without my baby if I get out of here."

He thanked his friends for their support and asked them to raise a toast for "my angel".

Ms Hyndman, from Castleford, West Yorkshire, died a day after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion - the island's largest city - suffering from severe abdominal pain.

It was originally thought Walker would face a lesser charge of causing a fatal bodily injury but he was charged with murder and remanded into custody.

It is understood the couple were intending to spend the summer working on the island.

A Facebook group entitled "Luke Walker - Innocent Until Proven Innocent" has been set up by friends of the accused on the social networking site and has attracted almost 3,800 members.
