Andy Murray's historic Wimbledon victory was the most discussed topic on Facebook of 2013.

The tennis ace's triumph over Novak Djokovic sparked more conversations on the social networking site than any other event this year amongst UK users.

The death of Margaret Thatcher was the second most talked about event, followed by the UEFA Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Other hot topics included the birth of Prince George, England's cricketers winning the Ashes (way back then) and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Globally the most talked about event of the year was the election of Pope Francis in May.

Facebook's data editor Robert D'Onofrio said: "Conversations happening all over Facebook offer a unique snapshot of the world, and this year was no different. Every day, people post about the topics and milestones that are important to them."

Top ten topics:

  1. Andy Murray wins the Wimbledon Championships
