Archbishop's plea in Claudia case

12 April 2012

The Archbishop of York said he remained "hopeful" that missing chef Claudia Lawrence would be found.

Dr John Sentamu said "we cannot ignore Claudia Lawrence who is still missing after four-and-a-half months".

One theory about what happened to the 35-year-old is that she could have been attacked or abducted as she walked to her workplace in a kitchen at York University on March 19.

Dr Sentamu said: "She was born, brought up and lived in Malton for 30 years, before moving to York. I remain hopeful that she will be found and I appeal to anyone with any information to come forward and contact the police, or contact myself if they are unwilling to talk to the police."

North Yorkshire Police still want to trace a man seen on the morning of March 18 or March 19 with a woman on Melrosegate Bridge, York.

The man was described at the time as about 5ft 6in tall and of thin build. He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top with the hood up and dark combat trousers with pockets on the side.

Detectives said he was smoking a cigarette which he was holding in his left hand, suggesting he was left-handed.

Miss Lawrence was last seen near her home in Heworth Road, York, on March 18. She spoke to both her parents on the phone that evening but failed to turn up for work the next day.

Her father, solicitor Peter Lawrence, has mounted a relentless campaign to try to find his daughter.

Detectives have said they believe Miss Lawrence has probably come to harm.
