Baby girl found in bin 'recovering'

12 April 2012

A newborn baby girl is recovering in hospital after being found in a wheelie bin, police said.

Shortly after giving birth, the child's 19-year-old mother, whose family apparently did not know she was pregnant, wrapped her daughter up and placed her in a bin outside the family home in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

It is believed she thought the baby was dead.

The teenager's parents later noticed she was bleeding. After taking her to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, they were told by medics that she had just given birth.

Police then searched the area around the family's house and, at 1am on Saturday, they found the child in the wheelie bin, a Wiltshire force spokesman said.

On being discovered, the baby was cold and barely alive but is now recovering in hospital where her mother is also receiving treatment, police said.
