'Blast' jury fail to reach verdicts

12 April 2012

A jury has failed to reach verdicts in the trial of a former British National Party candidate and a dentist accused of plotting to make a bomb with intent to endanger life.

Robert Cottage, 49, and David Jackson, 62, denied conspiracy to make an explosion with chemicals that they ordered on the Internet

The jury at Manchester Crown Court informed Justice Beatson they were unable to reach a majority verdict after deliberating for three days.

Prosecutor Louise Blackwell QC said the Crown Prosecution Service would apply for a retrial and the jury of five men and seven women was discharged.

Cottage, of Talbot Street, Colne, Lancashire, who failed to be elected as a BNP candidate in last May's local elections, and dentist Jackson, of Trent Road, Nelson, Lancashire, both denied conspiracy to cause an explosion.

Jackson, who was not a BNP member but had attended several party meetings, also denied one count of possessing explosives. Cottage had previously admitted the same charge.

A hearing will take place at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday, February 28, to arrange a date for a retrial.

Both men were remanded in custody.
