12 April 2012

An 11-year-old boy killed in a freak accident when a tree branch fell on him during an adventure holiday has been named as Daniel Mullinger.

The youngster was a pupil at the Heathlands Primary School, in West Bergholt, near Colchester. He was killed on Tuesday during a school trip in the grounds of Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer, Norfolk, when he was taking part in an outdoor activity course run by the Essex primary school.

Two boys and a girl were also injured in the accident. An 11-year-old boy suffered pelvic and internal injuries in the incident and police said his condition was "critical but stable".

A 10-year-old boy was suffering from a wrist injury, while an 11-year-old girl sustained leg and arm injuries.

The three injured children, who are all from the West Bergholt area, are being treated at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The accident happened at about 3pm on Tuesday. The two 11-year-old boys were flown to hospital by air ambulance.

The pupils were among a group of about 60 who were staying at the Aylmerton Field Study Centre, which is near to the scene of the accident.

Police said investigations were continuing into the cause of the tragedy and the area surrounding it remained sealed off.
