Bride shot dead at honeymoon hotel

12 April 2012

A newlywed doctor has been shot dead in a robbery at her Caribbean honeymoon hotel that left her husband fighting for his life.

Catherine Mullany, formerly Bowen, was fatally wounded during the shooting on the island of Antigua on Sunday. Her husband Benjamin, of Pontardawe, near Swansea, south Wales, is fighting for his life in hospital with critical injuries.

The couple were attacked in their holiday cottage at the Cocos Hotel in the south west of the island.

Neighbours alerted police, who discovered Mrs Mullany with a fatal head wound at around 5am on Sunday. Mr Mullany was admitted to Holberton Hospital suffering a neck wound, according to the Antigua Sun newspaper.

The couple arrived in the Caribbean on July 14 and were expected to return home on Monday.

Mrs Mullany is a registered doctor who graduated from the University of London in 2002, according to General Medical Council records.

Mrs Mullany's brother was said to be "too upset to speak". Speaking from the family home at Plas Farm, Cilybebyll, Pontardawe, a friend said no-one would be making a statement.

A spokeswoman at the hotel, a popular getaway for newlyweds, said they had no comment to make on the shooting. Its website bills the hotel as an "exclusive resort for those looking to escape to paradise", located between two white sand beaches. The hillside hotel has only 19 cottages, set in expansive gardens overlooking the beaches, which cost up to £330 a night.

Antigua High Commissioner Carl Roberts said further details would be made public later. Police Commissioner Gary Nelson said officers from a special task force for serious crime were responsible for the inquiry.

Minister of tourism and civil aviation Harold Lovell said his thoughts were with the families of the victims, adding: "This isolated incident has deeply shocked our community and we wish to reassure visitors that Antigua and Barbuda is a safe destination."
