The Department for International Trade has grown to a global workforce of more than 3,000 people since it was formed in the wake of the Brexit referendum, according to a spokeswoman.

Its trade and policy group, which includes specialist analysts and lawyers, has also quadrupled in size.

The spokeswoman told the Press Association: "As part of our preparations to leave the EU, we have been working to identify the best trading opportunities available to the UK.

"Since June 2016, DIT has established a series of nine working groups with 15 countries and high-level dialogues to explore the best ways of progressing our trade and investment relationships."

Headed by Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade, the department was formed to strike and extend deals between the UK and non-EU states after 52 per cent of the electorate voted to leave the EU in last summer's plebiscite.

Its expenditure came under the microscope last month as media reported that deals remained thin on the ground despite heavy investment in the department.

Data released as part of a transparency exercise show that DIT ministers alone spent nearly £140,000 in the six months following the Brexit vote on a string of trips to worldwide destinations including the US, Turkey, Singapore, Brazil, Burma and Bahrain.
