British soldier dies in Afghanistan

12 April 2012

A British soldier died when rebels attacked a military base in Afghanistan.

The soldier, a member of 14 Signal Regiment, was shot dead during an assault on his platoon house in Musa Qaleh, in northern Helmand in the early hours of Sunday.

The Ministry of Defence said he suffered fatal injuries in a confrontation with rebels at about 5am local time (1.30am BST).

He was the 14th British soldier to be killed in action since operations began in November 2001, and the sixth to die in clashes this month.

The unstable Helmand province, which is in southern Afghanistan, has seen repeated firefights between Nato forces and Taliban insurgents.

British troops are in the central Asian state to help rebuilding and to tackle terrorism and heroin cultivation as part of a multi-national Nato force.

The MoD spokeswoman said: "It is with regret that the MoD can confirm the death of a British soldier from 14 Signal Regiment following an attack on the platoon house in Musa Qaleh, northern Helmand, Afghanistan, in the early hours of this morning.

"The soldier died immediately of wounds sustained during the attack. No other UK or friendly forces were injured in the incident."

Members of 14 Signal Regiment, which is based at Cawdor Barracks, Brawdy, Pembrokeshire, specialise in electronic warfare, including jamming communications.

The regiment was sent to Afghanistan on June 14 and has been working with members of the local army and police to bring order to the lawless region.
