Britons hurt in Algiers bus blast

12 April 2012

Three Britons have been injured in an explosion on a bus near Algiers, the Foreign Office has said.

Attackers threw a bomb and fired at two vehicles carrying employees of a subsidiary of US company Halliburton in the attack, killing an Algerian driver.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that there has been an explosion in Algiers, and Foreign Office consular staff are on the ground assisting British nationals.

"At this stage we can confirm that three British nationals have been slightly injured. There are no reports of any British fatalities."

The attackers threw a bomb at a bus carrying nine American employees of Brown & Root-Condor (BRC), as they were heading from their offices to a Sheraton Hotel nine miles west of Algiers, AP reported.

They then opened fire on a second bus, which quickly turned around and headed back to the BRC offices.

BRC reportedly has contracts in Algeria's oil and defence industries.
