Cameron attacks 'hollow' programme

12 April 2012

Tony Blair's final legislative programme as Prime Minister was branded "repetitive and hollow," by Tory leader David Cameron.

During a major debate on the Queen's Speech, Mr Cameron said: "The tragedy of this Prime Minister is that he promised so much and yet has delivered so little.

"And the tragedy of this Queen's Speech is that all his successor offers is more of the same.

"More laws on crime - yet violent crime up. More laws on health - yet hospitals closed. More laws on immigration - yet our borders still completely out of control.

"Every year the same promises. Every year the same failures."

Mr Cameron said the paradox of new Labour was that 12 years on the Prime Minister was still desperately looking for his legacy.

"Three massive majorities, a decade in power, 10 Gracious Speeches, 370 pieces of legislation and the question they've got to answer is why has so little been achieved.

"It's because they've put headlines above delivery, they believe in centralised power not social responsibility and all too often they just pass laws to make political points rather than deliver real change.

"This Queen's Speech is no different. It's so repetitive and hollow people feel they've heard it all before."

He said the Tories did welcome some of the proposals, like the Climate Change Bill, because they had proposed these measures themselves.
