Channel 4 has launched a dedicated menopause policy as the broadcaster seeks to “normalise the taboo subject” among its staff.

The policy, which supports employees experiencing menopausal symptoms and advises line managers how they can be supportive, is believed to be the first among the UK’s media companies.

Less than five per cent of UK businesses offer a dedicated menopause policy at a time when 59 per cent of women experiencing symptoms say they have a negative impact on their work.

Alex Mahon, CEO of Channel 4, said: “This is Channel 4 living its remit, normalising a taboo subject by making it more visible.”

As part of the policy, women will have access to flexible working arrangements, paid leave if feeling unwell due to menopause symptoms and a private, cool and quiet space for working.

Jane English, co-chair of 4Women, added: “Too many women suffer in silence due to the stigma around the menopause.

“We wanted to open up the conversation at Channel 4 and in doing so prompt the media industry to also start talking more about how they can better support women transitioning through it.”

Menopause symptoms vary for all women but can include hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, dizziness, fatigue, memory loss, depression, headaches, recurrent urinary tract infections, joint stiffness, aches and pains, reduced concentration and heavy bleeding.

Channel 4’s announcement coincides with World Menopause Day on Friday.
