An annual Christmas Day dip in the English Channel has been cancelled because of concerns over unusually high tides and strong winds.
Members of Brighton Swimming Club usually brave freezing sea temperatures to take a dip near Brighton Pier.
But the club cancelled the traditional event because of concerns over "treacherous conditions" for swimmers, Brighton and Hove City Council said.
A statement on the council's website said: "Brighton Swimming Club has decided to cancel their annual Christmas Day swim this year due to a mix of unusually high tides and strong winds.
"The swimming club have been talking to council seafront staff and took the decision on Christmas Eve because of concerns over treacherous conditions for swimmers.
"Weather forecasts are predicting tides of 6.4 metres which, combined with strong winds, could result in conditions which are highly dangerous even for the most experienced sea swimmers.
"The decision has been taken because negotiating the heavy shore break will be extremely hazardous. Safe entry and exit from the water will be difficult and there is a risk of swimmers being swept back out to sea."
The statement also advised people not to swim in the sea.
