Leader of the Commons Sir George Young has called a cross-party discussion on MPs' safety in the wake of the stabbing of former Treasury minister Stephen Timms.

Labour MP Mr Timms is recovering in hospital after being attacked as he met constituents in East Ham on Friday. A 21-year-old woman is due to appear before magistrates in Stratford on Monday charged with attempted murder.

Sir George said that face-to-face meetings with constituents were "an integral part of an MP's work" and it was important to ensure that security arrangements were in place to allow them to go ahead safely.

He will meet representatives of other parties and Commons authorities early next week to discuss what action can be taken.

Sir George said: "I was shocked to hear about the attack on Stephen Timms and I hope that he makes a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with his family and staff during this time.

"It's vital that we do not let this incident affect the public's right to meet their MP. Regularly meeting their constituents face to face is an integral part of an MP's work and it is especially important at a time when we need to rebuild public trust in Parliament.

"But it's also crucial that MPs feel able to carry out their constituency duties without feeling vulnerable to abuse or assault.

"I think it's important that we take this opportunity to review the security arrangements that are available in constituency surgeries, particularly given the large number of new MPs who have just been elected.

"I will be convening a cross-party meeting next week with the relevant House authorities so that we can look into what advice Parliament can issue to MPs and see if there are any further practical steps that can be taken."
