A mother sobbed as she appeared in court accused of the murder of her 15-month-old daughter.

Toddler Violet Mullen suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday and was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The ambulance service had alerted police shortly before 7.30pm and they later arrested the 22-year-old mother Claire Flanagan and her partner Gary Alcock, 28, who is not the baby's father.

The couple, of Huddersfield Road, Oldham, appeared before the town's magistrates both charged with Violet's murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Flanagan and Alcock spoke only to confirm their names and address.

No application for bail was made and they were remanded in custody to appear before magistrates again on Monday when their case is expected to be sent to Manchester Crown Court for trial.
