Plunging temperatures and cloudy skies failed to dampen the spirits of Ladies’ Day fashionistas at Aintree today.

An estimated 50,000 people were expected at the Liverpool racecourse for the second day of the Grand National meeting where the racing has become almost secondary to the outfits on display. Aintree regular Coleen Rooney, who is eight months pregnant, tweeted her disappointment at not being able to attend today’s event.

The 27-yearold wife of Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney, said: “First time in 10 years am not getting ready for Ladies Day!!! Gonna miss it!! Have fun everybody!! !!”

Stars of MTV’s reality show The Valleys wore striking outfits made from the Welsh flag.

Carley Belmonte, 21, said: “This is the first time I’ve ever been to the races so I’m just so happy. I love my dress, we decided to pull out all the stops for today.”
