Electrocution tragedy: victim named

12 April 2012

Teachers have led tributes to a 13-year-old boy who died after suffering a 25,000-volt electric shock at a rail freight depot.

Liam Gill is thought to have been on the roof of a train when he touched the overhead cables - "arcing" a massive power surge downwards.

Two other boys, both 14, who were also playing in the depot in Allerton, Liverpool, suffered serious burns and were taken to hospital.

British Transport Police said the investigation was continuing.

A spokesman said the injuries suffered by the 14-year-olds were "much more serious" than first thought although not considered life-threatening. They remain at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

One of Liam's teachers, Emma-Jane Percy, head of Year 9 at St Benedict's Catholic College, said: "Liam was a wonderful, bright young man. He was in the top set of Year 9, was a brilliant footballer, a friend to many and was always willing to help in times of need.

"Liam will be sadly missed by all staff and pupils at the school. He will be in our prayers and everybody at St Benedict's will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

Officers were called to the depot shortly before 5pm on Sunday after reports that three youths had been seen inside.

Chief Superintendent Peter Holden of British Transport Police said it appeared the boys had accessed the roof of a freight train which was in storage and came into close contact with the overhead electrical lines.

He added that there were warning signs around the site and that it was "as secure as it can be". The large depot, which is fenced off to prevent public access, remains cordoned off as the investigation continues.
