Google today paid tribute to pioneering mathematician Leonard Euler on the 306th anniversary of his birth with an interactive “doodle” on its homepage.

Euler was a Swiss mathematician and physicist known for his important work in number theory, astrology and mechanics.

Born in Basel in 1707, his father originally intended him to be a pastor. Instead Euler moved to Russia and then Berlin, going on to publish more than 800 papers and becoming one of the most important mathematicians of the eighteenth century. He died in Russia in 1783.

Google regularly puts doodles on its homepage to commemorate holidays, anniversaries and the lives of pioneering public figures. It has created more than 1,000 doodles for its home pages around the world.
