Harry Redknapp today said his wife is “fine” after he ran her over with his Range Rover in a "freak accident".

Mr Redknapp, 69, was dropping Sandra, his wife of 49 years, at the shops when he reportedly drove off with her coat trapped in the door.

The visibly shaken former Spurs and West Ham boss told MailOnline: "It was just a freak accident. She'd gone behind the car and to cross over the road. And as I went to drive off - I sort of drove over her ankle, basically. I thought she'd crossed.

“My wife's fine, she's had an operation on her ankle that went well. It's lucky. If the full weight of the car had run over the ankle - God knows what would have happened to her and her foot.”

Her son Jamie added: “My mum is back home and on the way to a full recovery. The only thing she is upset about is that she might not be fit to go to watch Louise on Strictly this Saturday. She doesn't like to miss it.”

Mrs Redknapp, also 69, was seen on two crutches and with her right leg in a cast as she hobbled into their home wearing a white dressing gown with pink stars on earlier today.

She was reported to have been accidentally dragged down the road in Poole Road, Bournemouth, at around 11.45am on Wednesday.

One local told The Sun: "I was in a shop and a couple of people came in and said, 'Crikey, there's a lady who's been dragged along the road'.

"Then someone else came in and said it was Harry Redknapp who had just dropped his wife off.

"I heard as he drove off she got her coat caught in the door. She was dragged along the road before he realised."

Mr Redknapp has managed Tottenham, Southampton, West Ham and Portsmouth.
