July 7 probe: Police get more time

12 April 2012

Police have been granted an extra seven days to question three men over the July 7 terrorist attacks in London.

Mohammed Shakil, 30, Sadeer Saleem, 26, and Shipon Ullah, 23, were arrested on March 22 on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts.

Two of the men were arrested at Manchester Airport when they were due to catch a flight to Pakistan while a third was arrested at a house in Leeds shortly afterwards.

They were all taken to London where they have been held since.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman confirmed that detectives had been granted an extra seven days to hold all three men.

The three, who were named last week by sources, are all said to have links to the Beeston suburb of Leeds, where three of the 7/7 bombers also had strong connections.

They were the first significant arrests in connection with the bombings, in which 52 innocent people were killed in July 2005.

They were held on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Police now have until April 5 to question the men before seeking a further extension.

Under new anti-terror laws police could potentially hold the men for a maximum of 28 days.
