July 7 woman 'unfairly sacked'

12 April 2012

A woman who was injured in the July 7 London bombings is taking her former employers to a tribunal after claiming she was unfairly dismissed just weeks after returning to work.

Nattashar Gittens, 30, was left with back and pelvic injuries, hearing problems, insomnia and bouts of depression after being caught up in the blast which blew apart a double-decker bus.

She was walking close to the bus, talking to her sister on a mobile phone, when the explosion happened, knocking her off her feet.

She claimed she was dismissed in April for poor performance, two months after returning to work at recruitment consultants James Harvard International in London.

Ms Gittens is taking her case to an employment tribunal, claiming unfair dismissal under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Her solicitor Alec Colson of law firm Irwin Mitchell said: "From a human perspective, the manner in which she was dismissed was pretty shoddy and was not a fair way of dealing with the situation."

Ms Gittens told London's Evening Standard that her former employers did not take into account what had happened to her before they dismissed her. "They wanted to get me out of the way and they found a way of doing that. It was nasty and underhand and I don't think they should be allowed to get away with that."

She said she returned to work two months after last year's blast but believed she went back too soon because she was still in pain and was unable to walk properly.

She said she took a couple of days off in April following the death of the mother of a close friend and on her return was sacked with immediate effect.

No-one was available to comment at James Harvard International.
