A top Conservative Party donor who is close to David Cameron has been cautioned for harassing his ex-wife.

Steel tycoon William Ives, 68, allegedly pestered Pearl Adams, 56, with phone calls for three years after they split.

Mr Ives, who owns Rainham Steel and is worth an estimated £266 million, was arrested at his Essex home on April 2. He told police he had been trying to win back his ex-wife.

Ms Adams alleged that Mr Ives had been calling her up to 30 times a week telling her he loved her, but sometimes using abusive language.

Mr Ives, who has given more than £560,000 to the Tories under Mr Cameron, told the Daily Mirror he accepted a caution on his lawyer’s advice despite his “gut reaction” not to do so.

He said claims about the number of calls were “rubbish” .
