12 April 2012

Judicial authorities said they have charged the man suspected of carrying out a bloody rampage at a day care centre in western Belgium, stabbing two babies and a female worker to death and seriously injuring 12 other people.

Authorities said they had identified the man, 20, who they believe carried out the rampage on Friday in the town of Dendermonde.

The prosecutor's office said the man was charged with three counts of murder.

Prosecutor Christian Du Four said the suspect was not under the influence of drugs.

Locals on Saturday laid flowers, teddy bears and lit candles outside the day care centre.

The man was carrying a backpack of weapons and the addresses of three other nurseries, Belgian authorities later said..

Mr Du Four said the suspect wore a bulletproof vest under his clothing and had a knife, an axe and a fake gun.
