Man faces court over double murder

12 April 2012

An unemployed man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of a disabled woman and her carer.

David Tiley, 47, spoke only to confirm his name when he made a brief appearance at Alton Magistrates' Court in Hampshire.

Tiley is charged with the murder of mother-of-five Sue Hale, 49, who suffered from a degenerative brain disorder, and her carer, mother-of-two Sarah Merritt, 39, at Mrs Hale's flat in Meggeson Avenue in Southampton last Thursday.

Post-mortem examinations on both women showed they had died from stab wounds.

The bodies were found by police officers after Mrs Merritt's husband, Peter, raised the alarm when she failed to return to their home in Oaktree Road, Southampton.

He had spotted his wife's car outside the flat of Ms Hale who Mrs Merritt, a mother-of-two, visited twice a week in her work as a professional carer.

Tiley, who was in a relationship with Mrs Hale, was arrested on Saturday morning.

He was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned for him to appear at Winchester Crown Court on March 28.

There was no application for bail.
