Nine boats carrying 125 people have been intercepted crossing the English Channel on their way to the UK, the Home Office has said.

Border Force met the migrants in the Channel on Friday after being alerted to small boats moving towards the UK.

The Home Office said the migrants would be dealt with in line with immigration rules, and some could be put in detention centres.

No details on the migrants' nationalities are available at this stage.

The first boat was intercepted at around 12.30am on Friday, and boats continued to make the crossing throughout the day.

French authorities also picked up a further 18 people trying to cross the channel in two boats and took them back to France.

The latest groups of migrants come as around 2,800 migrants have reached the UK so far in 2020 - including a record 180 last Sunday.

Home Office minister Chris Philp said both France and the UK should work harder to prevent so many crossings taking place.

The Immigration Compliance and Courts minister said: "It is in the interests of both France and the UK to stop people making this dangerous journey.

"The French have prevented more than 200 attempts in the past week alone, but more action is required."

He added that French and British governments would work together to "go after the criminals facilitating these crossings".
