Oxford Street is going up against shopping districts around the UK in a bid to scoop £10,000 and be named the best city high street in the country.

The Great British High Street Competition will see the street competing with others in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Norwich.

The winner of the competition, run by the Department for Communities and Local Government, will be decided by online public vote which opens next week.

High Streets Minister Andrew Percy said previous competitions were "a massive success" in "showcasing the very best high streets across the country" and added: “Our local high streets remain the life and soul of towns, villages and cities and I’d encourage as many of them as possible to enter."

Information about voting can be found at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk.
