Oxford Union president: 'My reputation has been trashed by rape allegations'

Ben Sullivan said the allegations were 'poisonous'

A former Oxford Union president has said his reputation has been "trashed" after he was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Ben Sullivan, 21, has been told he will not face charges after one woman accused him of rape and another woman alleged sexual assault by him.

The third year undergraduate's term as president of the historic Oxford Union ended on Saturday, and he has now complained of the impact the "poisonous" allegations had on his family.

Mr Sullivan, from Knightsbridge in London, said he did have sex after a night out with the woman who accused him of rape, but insisted it was consensual.

"Seeing my reputation trashed has been sobering and painful," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"My whole life has been rifled through and examined. It has been utterly draining."

High-profile speakers, believed to include the president of UK Human Rights Watch and the BBC's Dragon's Den judge Julie Meyer, boycotted debates at the university after his arrest in May.

He said of the impact on his family: "The stress they have had to live through is enormous. It has been tough too for my 12 year-old brother. He attends my old school, all the teachers there know me. Going to school every day has been tough on him."

Mr Sullivan, who studied at the prestigious St Paul's school in London, went on: "These poisonous allegations have made me re-evaluate everything. It has been very testing. I wondered how anyone could believe something so vile. I wondered how I was going to withstand all the poison.

"But did I ever have a moment of self-doubt? Did I ever think 'Am I sure I remember exactly what happened?' No, never. Not once. Yes, I had sex with the girl who claimed I raped her. But it was consensual. That is the truth."
