12 April 2012

A multi-car pile-up closed a busy stretch of motorway for more than three hours and left one person seriously injured.

Seven or eight cars were involved in the crash on the M1 at around 12pm and one passenger was airlifted to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Nottinghamshire police said a number of other people were hurt in the collision, which happened near Long Eaton.

A spokesman said: "At approximately 12pm on Friday there was a seven- or eight-car pile -up on the M1 northbound between junction 24a and 25, as a result of which a number of people were injured and the motorway was closed.

"It was decided by the emergency services at the scene to use the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire air ambulance and one of the passengers from one of the vehicles was airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre.

"The passenger from the vehicle has serious injuries although they are not described as life-ending."

He added the motorway had since reopened but there "was still an inquiry and investigation going on at the scene".
