Plucky Laura bows out of Wimbledon

12 April 2012

The Wimbledon crowd burst into life on the opening day of this year's tournament as the fans roared on teenage star Laura Robson.

With British hopes for success at its highest level for years, the battling 15-year-old girls champion from 2008 started her campaign by winning her first set against Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.

But the former quarter finalist proved too strong, eventually beating Robson 3-6 6-4 6-2.

Speaking straight after the match, her mother Kathy Robson said it had been a "nightmare" co-ordinating the tennis with her daughter's GCSEs.

"She played really well, she said. "Mentally she's still 15 and she needs to work on that side of her game. She just needs to grow up a bit, that's all."

Asked about her daughter's recent exams, she said: "It was murder, what a nightmare that was trying to organise exams. Other kids don't have that sort of pressure. I don't think it's really fair, but we couldn't change it."

So now the spotlight falls back on Andy Murray - who is being tipped by many to go all the way in 2009.

As a fortnight of tennis, strawberries and cream, and cloud-watching begins, Murray carries the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. The world number three's quest for glory gets under way against American Robert Kendrick on Tuesday and the 22-year-old Scot was the hot topic of conversation for people in the queue.

Nicky Joubert, 52, from Oxshott, Surrey, and her children, Jamie, 13, and Sophie, 20, have Centre Court tickets to see Murray in Tuesday's game.

"I think he's got a jolly good chance," she said. "We didn't like his personality when he was a bit younger but now he's OK. They say it's the girlfriend who is changing him for the better."
